Broadband Internet: Technologies, Speed Thresholds and Growing Network Demands

Broadband internet has evolved from a label for connections faster than dial-up into a broad category spanning fiber, cable, satellite and telephone-network technologies.

Broadband Internet: Technologies, Speed Thresholds and Growing Network Demands

Broadband internet broadly describes high-speed connectivity that surpasses older analog and basic digital telephone services. The term originally distinguished newer access methods from dial-up connections, which typically reached 56 kilobits per second, and basic ISDN service, which offered up to 128 kilobits per second.

As communications technology has advanced, the meaning of broadband has evolved. Definitions can also vary among standards-setting and regulatory organizations. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has defined broadband as access providing at least 200 kilobits per second in one direction, while the International Telecommunication Union has used a threshold of 2 megabits per second.

Common broadband access technologies

The types of broadband available depend on a country's infrastructure, geography and telecommunications market. Major access technologies include:

  • Fiber to the home: FTTH carries data over fiber-optic lines installed directly at a residence.
  • Cable: Cable broadband uses infrastructure associated with cable television networks.
  • Satellite: Satellite systems provide connectivity through communications satellites and can serve locations beyond the reach of many terrestrial networks.
  • DSL: DSL technologies transmit broadband service over traditional telephone networks.
  • Emerging systems: Additional access technologies continue to be developed as network capabilities and user requirements change.

Why network capacity matters

Internet traffic is expanding as data-intensive content becomes more common. Streaming movies and music, for example, requires substantially more capacity than basic text-based services.

This growth can place traditional networks under increasing strain. When infrastructure cannot accommodate the volume and characteristics of generated traffic, operators may struggle to maintain consistent service quality. If demand continues to rise, capacity constraints are likely to become more pronounced, making network modernization and scalable broadband infrastructure increasingly important.
