CONNECTION TROUBLESHOOTING

Find the cause ofinternet problems

Start with the symptom, measure the connection, then compare Wi-Fi, Ethernet, latency, jitter and packet loss before changing equipment or plans.

Run connection test →Diagnose slow Wi-Fi
Why Is My Internet Suddenly Slow?A sudden slowdown is usually caused by Wi-Fi interference, competing traffic, a device or router problem, or temporary ISP congestion. Test the connection, then compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi results before changing your plan.
Fast Speed Test but Slow Internet?A fast download result can coexist with poor browsing, calls or gaming when latency, jitter, packet loss, DNS, Wi-Fi or the destination service is the bottleneck. Measure connection quality, not only Mbps.
Why Is Wi-Fi Slower Than Your Internet Speed?Wi-Fi adds a shared radio link between your device and router. Distance, walls, interference, channel width and device capabilities can reduce the speed delivered by an otherwise fast internet plan.
Why Is My Internet Slow at Night?Evening slowdowns often point to congestion on the home network or the provider network. Repeat comparable wired tests during quiet and busy hours to distinguish a recurring pattern from one bad result.
Why Does My Internet Keep Dropping?Repeated connection drops can come from unstable Wi-Fi, overloaded equipment, signal problems, congestion or competing traffic. Look for a pattern across time, devices and wired versus wireless tests.
Why Is My Upload Speed Slow? Many internet plans are asymmetric, so upload capacity is intentionally lower than download. Wi-Fi, cloud backups, video calls and provider congestion can reduce it further.
Why Is My Download Speed Slow?Slow downloads can result from a busy home network, weak Wi-Fi, a limited device or server, provider congestion, or a plan that delivers less capacity than expected. Compare a controlled wired test with the affected download before blaming one component.
Why Does My Wi-Fi Keep Disconnecting?Repeated Wi-Fi disconnects usually point to weak signal, radio interference, roaming or band-steering behavior, device software, or an overloaded access point. A wired comparison helps determine whether the internet connection itself also drops.
Why Is the Internet Slow on One Device Only?If other devices are fast, the bottleneck is usually local to the affected device: its Wi-Fi link, background traffic, browser, VPN, network settings or hardware. Test both devices in the same place under the same conditions.
Is Slow Internet Caused by Your Router or ISP?Compare a wired test at the router with Wi-Fi tests in multiple rooms. Good wired performance with poor Wi-Fi points locally; poor wired results across devices and times are stronger evidence of an ISP or modem issue.
How to Check for ISP ThrottlingOne slow test does not prove throttling. Build evidence with repeated tests, controlled devices, different times and destinations, then compare the results with the plan terms and provider status information.
High Ping With Fast Internet?Throughput and latency measure different things. A connection can move a lot of data per second yet respond slowly because of distance, routing, congestion, Wi-Fi or oversized queues.
Packet Loss With Good Internet Speed?A high throughput result does not rule out packet loss. Loss can be intermittent and may come from weak Wi-Fi, congestion, faulty equipment or an upstream route.
High Jitter: Causes, Tests and FixesHigh jitter means latency changes significantly between packets. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, busy upload queues and unstable routes are common causes, and the variation can disrupt games and calls even when average speed is high.
Bufferbloat: Why Gaming Lags While the Network Is BusyWhen another activity fills the connection, router queues can increase latency even if there is enough advertised speed. This is commonly described as loaded latency or bufferbloat.
How to Reduce Ping Without Upgrading InternetA faster plan does not automatically lower ping. Ethernet, better Wi-Fi placement, less competing traffic and a nearer application server often improve latency without buying more Mbps.
