How to Install Windows 11: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing Windows 11 requires a compatible computer, installation media, and a few decisions about whether to preserve the current system or start fresh. The process is straightforward, but checking compatibility and preparing your files beforehand can help prevent avoidable problems.

What Windows 11 offers

Windows 11 updates the desktop experience with rounded interface elements, a redesigned Start menu, revised notification and quick-settings controls, and expanded window-management features. Snap Layouts and Snap Groups make it easier to arrange multiple applications, while improved virtual desktops help separate different tasks or workspaces.

The operating system also improves support for modern monitors, docking stations, keyboards, mice, and other peripherals. Compared with earlier Windows releases, it places greater emphasis on current security hardware and technologies such as TPM 2.0. Windows 11 previously introduced support for running Android applications, although the availability of that capability depends on the Windows release and supported services.

Check the hardware requirements

Before downloading Windows 11 or changing any system settings, confirm that the computer is compatible. The principal requirements include:

ComponentMinimum requirement
ProcessorCompatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster
MemoryAt least 4 GB of RAM
StorageAt least 64 GB
GraphicsDirectX 12 compatible with a WDDM 2.0 driver
DisplayAt least 9 inches diagonally with 720p resolution
SecurityTrusted Platform Module 2.0

Microsoft’s PC Health Check utility can evaluate the computer and identify compatibility issues. Run it before preparing installation media, especially if you are uncertain whether TPM 2.0 or other required features are enabled.

Prepare before installing

Back up important documents and other irreplaceable files before changing the operating system. This is particularly important for a clean installation, which may delete applications, settings, partitions, and personal data.

You will also need a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity or a suitable DVD. Creating installation media can erase the selected device, so copy anything important from it first.

Download Windows 11 and create bootable media

Obtain the Windows 11 ISO or Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s official software download service. The Media Creation Tool can download the required files and prepare a bootable USB drive.

  1. Run the Media Creation Tool.
  2. Review and accept the license terms.
  3. Select the option to create installation media for another PC.
  4. Choose the required language, Windows edition, and 64-bit architecture.
  5. Select a USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file as the destination.
  6. Confirm the correct device and allow the tool to create the installation media.

The download and media-creation process can take several minutes or longer, depending on the computer, storage device, and internet connection.

Choose an installation method

Upgrade the existing installation

An upgrade is intended to retain compatible applications, settings, and personal files. To perform an in-place upgrade, open the installation media from within the current Windows environment and run Windows Setup. Review the installer’s summary carefully to confirm what will be preserved.

Perform a clean installation

A clean installation starts the computer from the USB drive or DVD and installs Windows on a selected partition. This approach is useful when setting up a new drive or replacing the existing operating system, but it can remove all data from the chosen partition.

Boot from the installation media

  1. Connect the bootable USB drive or insert the installation DVD.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Open the boot menu or BIOS/UEFI settings. Common keys include F2, F10, F12, and Delete, although the correct key varies by manufacturer.
  4. Select the USB drive or DVD as the temporary boot device. If necessary, change the boot order in the firmware settings.
  5. Save any changes and restart the computer.

If the computer boots from the media successfully, the Windows 11 installer will appear.

Install Windows 11

  1. Select the language, time and currency format, and keyboard layout, then continue.
  2. Select Install now.
  3. Enter a valid product key when requested. If activation will be handled later, select I don’t have a product key.
  4. Choose the correct Windows edition if the installer presents multiple options.
  5. Read and accept the license terms.
  6. Select the appropriate installation type. Use the upgrade path when preserving an eligible existing installation, or choose the custom option for a clean installation.
  7. For a custom installation, select the destination drive or partition. Delete or create partitions only when you understand which data they contain.
  8. Start the installation and wait while Windows copies files and configures the system.

The computer may restart several times. Unless prompted, do not press a key to boot from the installation media again after the first restart, or the setup process may begin from the start.

Complete initial setup

After the operating system files are installed, Windows will guide you through its initial configuration. Depending on the edition and network status, the process can include:

  • Choosing the country or region and confirming the keyboard layout
  • Connecting to a wired or wireless network
  • Signing in with or creating a Microsoft account
  • Reviewing privacy and diagnostic-data settings
  • Configuring personalization and other device options

Once these steps are complete, Windows 11 will load the desktop.

Update Windows and install drivers

Open Windows Update and install all available system, security, and driver updates. More than one restart may be required, so check for updates again after rebooting.

Verify that important hardware—including graphics, audio, networking, Bluetooth, cameras, printers, and docking equipment—works correctly. If Windows Update does not provide a required driver, use the appropriate software supplied by the computer or device manufacturer.

Finally, confirm that Windows is activated, reinstall necessary applications, and restore any files backed up before the installation.
