When Did Phones Get Cameras?

When Did Phones Get Cameras?

Camera phones arrived in 2000, beginning the shift toward the all-in-one smartphones people now take for granted. Two models released that year marked important early steps: Samsung’s SCH-V200 and Sharp’s J-Phone J-SH04.

Samsung’s Early Camera Phone

The Samsung SCH-V200 could capture and store up to 20 photos. Unlike modern phones, however, it did not let users review those images directly on the handset. The phone had to be connected to a computer before the pictures could be viewed.

Viewing Photos on the Phone

Later in 2000, Sharp introduced the J-Phone J-SH04. Its key advance was the ability to display captured photos on the phone’s own screen, making mobile photography more immediate and convenient.

Image quality on these first camera phones was poor by current standards. Even so, the models established two capabilities that would become fundamental to smartphones: taking a picture with a mobile device and viewing it without relying on a separate camera.

The Beginning of an Everyday Feature

Today, buyers expect phones to include cameras capable of producing high-quality images. That familiar feature can trace its beginnings to the basic camera phones introduced in 2000, when storing 20 photos or reviewing a picture on a handset represented a notable technological advance.
