Internet Analysis vs Speedtest.net: Methods and Use Cases

Compare Internet Analysis and Speedtest.net by throughput method, endpoint and follow-up diagnostics rather than a claimed accuracy ranking.

SHORT ANSWER

Speedtest.net measures download, upload and ping using its test service. Internet Analysis uses M-Lab NDT7 for its dedicated throughput test and separately labeled HTTP timing checks for controlled diagnostics. Use each result within its own method and endpoint; neither one result nor a difference between tools proves an ISP fault.

STEP BY STEP

How to run the check

  1. Choose a repeatable questionWrite down whether you need transfer capacity, timing under load or a specific application’s behavior. These are different questions.
  2. Keep test conditions comparableUse one device and access mode, pause unrelated transfers and record each service’s endpoint and time. Do not run competing bandwidth tests simultaneously.
  3. Preserve differences rather than averaging themDifferent endpoints and methods can legitimately produce different values. Repeat each service separately; averaging incompatible results can hide the cause.
  4. Use a targeted follow-upIf Wi-Fi differs from Ethernet, investigate the local link. If only one endpoint differs, examine the destination and route. Save failures and limits with the results.Open the relevant tool →
INTERPRETATION

What the signals mean

ThroughputDifferent services

Internet Analysis uses M-Lab NDT7 on /speedtest. Speedtest.net documents download and upload measurement. Do not expect identical results from different servers or methods.

TimingRead the test definition

Speedtest documents ping. Internet Analysis distinguishes throughput tests and HTTP response timing; HTTP failures are not directly measured packet loss.

Next stepCompare and investigate

Internet Analysis links diagnostics to FCC-based provider availability, guides and physics calculators. These are additional contexts, not proof of a better measurement.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is Internet Analysis more accurate than Speedtest.net?

This page does not establish that. A controlled independent study would need comparable endpoints, repeated observations and disclosed methods. We have not performed such a study.

Why do two speed tests disagree?

They can use different routes, endpoints, transfer designs and timing definitions. Device limits and competing traffic also change over time. Repeat comparable conditions before concluding that either service is wrong.
