PRACTICAL TOOL GUIDE

How to Calculate Download and Upload Time

Calculate file transfer time from GB and Mbps, distinguish bits from bytes and account for sustained speed.

SHORT ANSWER

For decimal GB, ideal transfer time in seconds equals GB × 8000 ÷ sustained Mbps. A 10 GB file at 100 Mbps takes 800 seconds, or 13 minutes 20 seconds. Use upload Mbps when sending files and download Mbps when receiving them; processing after the transfer is separate.

STEP BY STEP

How to use the tool

  1. Read the file size unitDecimal GB and binary GiB differ. 10 GiB is about 10.737 GB and takes about 7.4% longer at the same rate.
  2. Measure the relevant directionUse sustained throughput to the destination when available. Upload may be much slower than download.Open the relevant tool →
  3. Convert bits and bytesDivide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s: 200 Mbps equals 25 MB/s before overhead.Open the relevant tool →
  4. Estimate and separate processingEnter size and speed. Use 100% efficiency for already measured payload throughput; a lower efficiency is a scenario, not a diagnosis. Installation and cloud processing take additional time.Open the relevant tool →
INTERPRETATION

How to interpret the output

10 GB / 100 Mbps13 min 20 sec

Ideal, decimal units, constant sustained rate.

50 GB / 20 Mbps5 hr 33 min 20 sec

Ideal upload duration for a large backup.

200 Mbps25 MB/s

Eight bits make one byte.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Will the transfer finish at the predicted time?

Only under the assumed constant rate. Congestion, server throttling, Wi-Fi and storage can change it.

Does resizing images reduce upload time?

If the exported files are smaller, less data needs transferring. Check actual file size; pixel dimensions alone do not guarantee a byte size.
